Perché passare dalla melamina al RPET?

Replacing all melamine tableware with ceramic-like rPET tableware brings significant benefits to both society and individuals, primarily in three dimensions: health and safety, environmental protection, and economic efficiency.

  1. Health and Safety: Significantly Reducing Health Risks

Melamine tableware is polymerized from melamine and formaldehyde. While qualified products are relatively safe at room temperature, potential health risks exist. When temperatures exceed 70°C, melamine tableware may release trace amounts of formaldehyde and melamine monomers. Long-term exposure to excessive formaldehyde can irritate the respiratory tract or cause allergies, while excessive intake of melamine may increase the burden on the kidneys. In 2023, inspections by the State Administration for Market Regulation revealed four batches of melamine tableware failed to meet standards for stain resistance and melamine migration. Some substandard products even used urea-formaldehyde resin as a cheaper substitute, and long-term use may increase the risk of diseases such as leukemia and tumors.

In contrast, rPET tableware is made from recycled PET beverage bottles. Through physical and chemical recycling technologies, the pollutant removal rate reaches 99.97%. The products are certified by international food safety standards such as FDA, GRS, and LFGB, contain no harmful substances like bisphenol A or heavy metals, and can withstand temperatures up to 176°C, making them safe for microwave heating and dishwasher cleaning. This ensures greater safety.

  1. Environmental Protection: Drastically Reducing Carbon Emissions and Resource Consumption

The environmental advantages of rPET tableware are highly significant. Producing one ton of rPET reduces carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by approximately 1.5 tons, lowers carbon emissions by about 60%, and cuts production energy consumption by around 50% compared to virgin PET. Manufacturing a 550ml rPET bottle reduces carbon emissions during production by 80% compared to using virgin PET material. Additionally, each ton of rPET saves about 7.4 barrels of crude oil and reduces water consumption by 50%.

From a resource recycling perspective, rPET achieves a closed-loop cycle from “bottle to tableware.” In 2024, China recycled 5.8 million tons of PET beverage bottles, with a recycling rate of approximately 94%, ranking first globally. If all recycled materials were converted into rPET, they could replace about 5.5 million tons of virgin PET raw materials, equivalent to reducing crude oil consumption by approximately 11 million tons. Compared to melamine tableware, which may cause environmental pollution during production and disposal, rPET’s recycling model significantly alleviates environmental burdens.

  1. Economic Efficiency: Reducing Comprehensive Usage Costs

Although the initial procurement cost of rPET tableware may be slightly higher than that of melamine tableware, it offers greater advantages from a total lifecycle cost perspective. While melamine tableware is relatively inexpensive, its lifespan is limited, and it cannot be recycled or reused after damage. In contrast, rPET tableware can be reused over 500 times and can be recycled after use, forming a complete circular economy chain.

From an operational standpoint, the lightweight and durable nature of rPET tableware significantly reduces transportation and breakage costs. For example, Yum China, with brands like KFC and Pizza Hut, has replaced melamine tableware in over 2,100 of its 2,800 stores nationwide. This initiative reduces annual single-use plastic consumption by approximately 12,000 tons, while the tableware breakage rate is controlled at 3.7% per year, far lower than the 8.2% for ceramic tableware.

  1. Policy Support: Access to Multiple Policy Benefits

Driven by the “dual carbon” goals and green development strategies, governments worldwide have introduced various policies to support the rPET industry. The EU mandates that food-contact plastic products contain at least 50% recycled content by 2030, while China’s 14th Five-Year Plan for Plastic Pollution Control explicitly includes rPET tableware in the priority procurement list. Enterprises with GRS certification and an rPET usage rate exceeding 30% benefit from green loan interest rates that are, on average, 0.85 percentage points lower than the benchmark rate, saving approximately RMB 2.3 million in annual financial costs per RMB 100 million in revenue.

In contrast, melamine tableware faces stricter regulatory requirements. The Technical Specifications for Safety of Food Contact Materials, issued by the National Standardization Administration in 2024, imposes more stringent limits on formaldehyde migration for melamine products (≤1.5mg/dm²), which may increase compliance costs in the short term.

  1. Market Prospects: Growing Consumer Acceptance

Survey data show that over 60% of consumers support the use of rPET in food packaging. When consumers understand the positive role of rPET in energy conservation, emission reduction, and resource recycling, they demonstrate a greater willingness to embrace it. In 2024, the European food service industry’s usage of rPET exceeded 420,000 tons, accounting for 31% of all plastic tableware, and is projected to exceed 450,000 tons by 2025. The International Air Transport Association estimates that by 2028, global flights will consume 12 billion units of rPET tableware, accounting for 65% of plastic products in aviation.

In summary, replacing melamine tableware with rPET tableware not only reduces health risks and protects the environment but also provides policy support and economic benefits, making it a crucial step toward promoting sustainable development.
